    Wildkats look to sweep Bears

    Willis hosts Montgomery on Tuesday as the regular season winds down to a close. The two teams have battled all season long for one of the four boys soccer playoff berths from District 40-4A.

    Willis won the first match between the two teams by a 2-1 margin at Montgomery. The Bears would love nothing more than to turn the tables this time around, but the Wildkats have sweep on their minds.

    Willis closes the regular season on Friday at Huntsville, while Montgomery hosts Navasota. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

    Matchup: Montgomery Bears vs. Willis Wildkats

    When: 7 p.m., Tuesday

    Where: Willis High School

    What’s at stake: Playoff positioning could be decided after Tuesday’s matches are completed.

    Willis players to watch: Luis Gramillo, Christian Juarez, Alex Alfaro.

    Montgomery players to watch: James Winkler, Dylan Hyatt, Blake Talbott.

    TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
    Willis: The Wildkats went 4-0-1 after dropping back-to-back matches to district frontrunners Brenham (2-1) and Waller (1-0). That put Willis back in the playoff race entering last week’s action. The Wildkats were in fourth place with 12 points (5-3-2) and one point ahead of fifth-place Huntsville (5-4-1). Luis Gramillo scored eight goals in the first 16 matches of the season to lead the attack.

    Montgomery: The Bears won three matches and tied another entering last week’s play following a 2-1 loss to Willis in the first round of district play. That put Montgomery in solid position for the playoffs with 14 points (6-2-2), just a point behind second-place Brenham (6-1-3) and three behind district-leader Waller (8-2-1). Over the first 10 district matches Montgomery averaged 2.1 goals per outing. The Bears were shut out just once (2-0 by Waller).
