    Lady Bears to meet Huntsville today

    The District 40-4A girls’ soccer season is headed into the homestretch with just a couple of weeks remaining. Monday’s match will go a long way in not only determining playoff status but also could play a role in the district championship as well.

    Montgomery won the first meeting between the two teams back in early February. A goal in each half made the difference in a 2-1 victory. Both teams have four matches remaining after Monday’s and each plays two more at home and two more on the road.

    Matchup: Huntsville Lady Hornets vs. Montgomery Lady Bears

    When: 7 p.m., Monday

    Where: Montgomery High School

    What’s at stake: Both teams are hoping to capture a district title.

    Huntsville players to watch: Beatriz Juarez, Chelsea McCracken, Yesenia Nieto.

    Montgomery players to watch: Meghan Leitz, Jessica Canestrini, Cori Easter.

    TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
    Huntsville: The Hornets entered last week’s play at 5-2-1 in the district and 8-7-1 overall. The Lady Hornets had tough one-goal losses to Brenham (1-0) and Montgomery (2-1) and tied Magnolia West (2-2). Beatriz Juarez leads the team and the district in scoring with 13 district goals and 31 total points. Goalkeeper Chelsea McCracken has a 0.86 goals allowed average, including one shutout and 39 saves.

    Montgomery: A solid team effort has led the Lady Bears to a 6-2 district record entering play this week and a 12-4-2 overall mark for the season. Montgomery started last week just one game behind league-leading Brenham (7-1). Meghan Leitz and Jessica Canestrini tallied nine points each while Taylor Holland and Alexx LaBaume provided eight points apiece. Goalkeeper Cori Easter recorded a 0.88 goals allowed average, including one shutout and 56 saves.
