Sheriff adds platform to SWAT vehicles

To go with its new SWAT vehicle, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is purchasing an elevated platform to access multi-story buildings.

The liberator hydraulic rescue system, which attaches to the top of the SWAT vehicle, allows the team to access multi-levels simultaneously, enhanced the element of surprise and increasing safety on tactical operations.

The equipment, which costs nearly $90,000, will be paid for through a federal Homeland security grants.

Montgomery County recently ordered its first SWAT vehicle, a $300,000 steel armored vehicle that can transport six full equipped members. That too will be paid for by federal Department of Homeland Security grants.

Because of the number of incidents in the county over the last two years, the vehicle is needed to get closer to scenes without putting deputies in jeopardy. The vehicle also can be equipped with battering rams to break down doors, said Chief Deputy Randy McDaniel of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
